Canadese beroepsorganisaties willen fuseren
De drie grootste Canadese beroepsorganisaties van accountants bereiden een fusie voor. Als de fusie slaagt wordt de nieuwe beroepsorganisatie met 170.000 leden één van de grootste ter wereld.
De drie organisaties, het Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA), de Certified Management Accountants of Canada (CMA Canada) en de Certified General Accountants of Canada (CGA-Canada), presenteerden op 17 januari de fusieplannen aan hun leden.
"The three national bodies believe uniting the profession would allow them to better meet the evolving needs of Canadian accountants, national and international business communities as well as continuing to protect the public interest", zo stellen de beroepsorganisaties in een persbericht.
Volgens Joy Thomas, president en ceo van CMA Canada, is het gezien de globalisatie niet meer dan logisch dat de organisaties hun krachten bundelen en daarmee een invloedrijkere positie krijgen. "Internationally, other accounting bodies are coming to grips with globalization and we cannot stand in isolation."
Als de plannen doorgaan, komt er in Canada één titel, Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA). De huidige leden krijgen van hun provinciale beroepsorganisaties de titel toegekend, maar moeten daarnaast de komende tien jaar naast hun CPA-titel ook de titel vermelden die zij voorheen hadden (CA, CMA of CGA). Na tien jaar kan de accountant kiezen om alleen nog de CPA-titel te gebruiken.
Voor nieuwe leden ontwikkelen de beroepsorganisaties een opleidings- en examenprogramma voor de nieuwe CPA-certificatie.
Omdat het beroep in Canada op provinciaal niveau is geregeld, moeten ook de provinciale beroepsorganisaties fuseren. "The national organizations are circulating the framework and CPA certification program to their members and the councils and boards of the provincial and territorial accounting organizations as a platform to review and consider unification and, as a means to engage members, governments, regulators and other important stakeholders. As the Canadian accounting profession is provincially regulated, any subsequent merger proposals would be issued provincially."
