Toezichthouder UK: 'Beperk nadruk op financiële performance'
De Britse Audit Inspection Unit (AIU) roept accountantskantoren op tot meer terughoudendheid met non-auditdiensten bij auditklanten en tot minder nadruk op financiële performance.
De AIU, onderdeel van de Professional Oversight Board, doet dit in zijn jaarlijkse rapportage over de accountantssector. In het rapport ‘2008/9 Audit quality inspections. An overview' dringt de toezichthouder tevens aan op meer duidelijkheid over de regels voor auditor rotatie en op alertheid op ‘audit risks', vooral in verband met going concern kwalificaties.
De AIU wijst er ook op dat bepaalde firma's op ongeoorloofde wijze voor de externe controle ook personeel van de interne auditdiensten van ondernemingen hebben ingeschakeld.
De toezichthouder baseert zich op onderzoek van zeventig audits door de big four en andere belangrijke accountantsorganisaties. Acht van die audits behoeven volgens de AIU significante verbetering op bepaalde gebieden.
De toezichthouder meldt ook dat accountantskantoren in interne communicatie met auditpersoneel soms teveel nadruk lijken te leggen op de financiële performance:
"The AIU found some evidence of firms increasing the emphasis on maintaining or improving financial performance in their explicit or implicit communications to audit personnel due to the current economic climate. This was apparent from the content of certain internal communications to audit personnel, the objectives set for certain audit personnel and bonus criteria. The AIU is concerned that this could lead audit personnel to believe that the importance certain firms place on quality, as opposed to maintaining or improving the financial performance of the firm, has been reduced."
